Why was it Manufactured?
This structure's primary function is to provide a comfortable and protected entrance area for hospital patrons. The harsh Nebraska weather delivers a multitude of weather conditions, therefore the structure was designed to block blowing snow from the north and keep the doorway dry during heavy rains.
Where is it Located?
Crete, Nebraska
What is unique about the structure and/or what technical difficulties were overcome to make it a reality?
The architect provided many challenges from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. The area from the main entry, north to the far side of the driveway, had to remain entirely unobstructed. In addition, it was made very clear that large structural members spanning the distance were not desired. Conical structures were not even considered and anything unreasonably flat could not support the high snow loading. Architecturally, the structure was to contrast the very stark and linear elements of the main building while implanting a 'softness' that would gently roll up to the building as do the plains of Nebraska.
How did the project achieve the client's needs?
In response to the design demands put forth by the architect, we quickly developed a concept that would implement tapered masts that rake upwards (at 50 to 60 degrees) and over the center of the drivelane to support the membrane, while maintaining the required clearance to emergency vehicles. To achieve the softness desired by the architect, two 'humps' were created.
