American Express Exhibit

This exhibit was designed to welcome back employees upon the post-September 11 reopening of the American Express building in Manhattan.? The 7 organically shaped pod structures and ceiling canopy define space, diffuse light, and create the basis of an environment for an exhibition of photography by Annie Leibovitz.

Title of Project: American Express ?Rewarding Lives? Exhibit

Why was it Manufactured? The pods and canopy were designed in natural shapes and crafted of sheer white spandex stretched over a frame of lightweight aluminum tubing, intended to transform a space dominated by right angles into a soothing, ethereal environment and create an intimate space within which to view the photographs.

Where is it Located? Originally installed at the American Express building in New York, the exhibit has been shown at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and the Herbst Pavillion in San Francisco.? See www.TheModerns.com for tour schedule.

What is Unique about the Structure and/or what Technical Difficulties were Overcome to make it a Reality? The starting point in the engineering of the shapes were 1/8?=1 ft scale models based on natural stone shapes, made of wire and colored gauze: beautiful, tiny, delicate shapes.? 3D visualization tools enhanced the ability to communicate with the designer about the necessary solutions involved in translating those models into structurally sound full scale pieces.? The translucent stretch fabric was chosen specifically for its ability to translate the natural, changing light of day and the intense, jewel-like colors of gelled lights used at night, into softly glowing tones.

How Did the Project Achieve the Client?s Needs? The completed pieces were an authentic achievement if the designer?s vision, creating the sense of intimacy and calm envisioned, and influencing the color and lighting of installation as planned.? The lightweight, reusable materials for a traveling exhibition and ?Rewarding Lives? have won numerous awards from design, lighting, engineering and business sources.
